Locus Software Helps Photographers Get More From Their Cameras
Innovative computer software that removes the guesswork from photography by accurately calculating the focus, amount of blur, fields of view, lens perspective, scene resolution and magnification, diffraction limits and much more.
EDWARDSBURG, MI, April 23, 2007 – Harris Tech today announces the Locus computer program – a powerful focus and photo geometry calculator for computers running Microsoft Windows XP and Vista. It takes information about a camera and lens and calculates many things about the scene, including:
• Focus – Unlike common depth of field tables and calculators that rely on data from the 1930s, Locus can accurately calculate which parts of a scene will be in focus and out of focus. Now the true depth of field and hyperfocal distance of a modern camera can be determined for a specified output size and viewing distance. Plus, it can recommend a minimum shutter speed to "freeze" two different kinds of motion—camera shake and a moving subject—for sharp in-focus images. In the case of a moving subject, Locus calculates not only its rate of travel across the field of view, but it also considers its change in size as it approaches or recedes from the camera and it considers how far it can travel and still be within the depth of field.
• Blur – It isn't enough to know the true depth of field if the photographer wants to understand how blurry a photo's "bokeh" will be. What is needed is to know how blurry an out-of-focus point will be. Locus calculates this at any desired location.
• Photo Geometry – Locus calculates angles of view, fields of view (and the focus distances required to produce them), the lens perspective, and the scene resolution and magnification. It can help the photographer determine if a photo will have enough pixels to resolve important details.
A large camera database is included. It contains the parameters for many hundreds of cameras and users can add, edit or delete information in it. Free updates are provided for download from the Locus website (www.ht-locus.com) as they become available.
Locus also calculates useful information about the camera and lens such as the camera's true megapixels, diffraction limit, field of view factor, enlargement factor, minimum recommended shutter speed for hand-held shooting, lens classification, and lens aperture diameter. Plus all calculations can take a lens teleconverter into account.
Locus has a variety of useful tools such as a COC (circle of confusion) Calculator to adjust the accuracy of all focus and blur calculations, a Focal Length Calculator to determine the required focal length for a specified field of view and focus distance, and a Crop Calculator to determine the required number of pixels and crop size for a desired output.
Locus offers a variety of outputs. The data in its main window, including lens perspective drawings, can be printed or exported to other programs. Plus custom depth of field, focus limits and field of view tables can be created.
Locus also includes a detailed on-screen User Manual. It is loaded with great information and illustrations, including a comprehensive illustrated dictionary of the photography terms used in the program.
Availability
Locus is available now for download at www.ht-locus.com. It has a built-in "Evaluation Period" which allows the user to launch the program up to 12 times during 30 days. This "try before you buy" feature enables the user to determine if the program meets their needs and is compatible with their computer.

About Harris Tech
Harris Technologies, Inc., was founded in 1988 to merge art and technology into innovative computer software. Our products are world leaders in their markets and each one began as a tool that we wrote for our own use to help us do the work that we love to do. We created Locus because we wanted to use it ourselves. Then we realized that it could be helpful to other photographers.
